Consultants Parsons Brinkerhoff report
titled “Isles of Scilly - Airport Improvement Project Options Analysis for St Mary’s Airport” underpins
the £4.6 million package of improvements being sought for St Mary’s
Airport. The report also identifies
options for dealing with the losses being incurred by the airport which are
estimated to be £145,000 by the end of the current financial year given year on
year reductions in passengers travelling to St Mary’s by air.
The introduction to the 230
page report provides a convincing explanation of the relationship between
transport costs, transport reliability and the performance of the tourism based
economy. The report was written (July 2012) before the closure of the BIH
helicopter service was announced.
