The campaign group Friends of Isles of Scilly Transport
(FRIST) is outraged by the news that the Isles of Scilly Steamship Group, the
monopoly provider of transport between the mainland and the Isles of Scilly,
has applied for a judicial review of the planning decision granted by Cornwall
Council for a new heliport at Penzance.
This heliport would enable the planned new helicopter service to operate
from an accessible mainland location much less susceptible to weather delays.
Marian Berkeley, FRIST Co-ordinator, said ‘this is purely a
delaying tactic to prevent competition, which will provide a more reliable and
convenient service. This action is
against the best interests of the community especially as it is being taken
immediately following a prolonged period of flight disruption, sometimes for
days on end.’
