Exceptional weather & seas disrupt transport links.

Llast week saw some amazing  seas around Scilly (over 9 metre swell recorded offshore) and indeed along the west coast of the UK generally.  There was a high risk of tidal flooding due to the combination of exceptional seas, very strong SW winds and spring tides.  The IOS Council issued a flood risk advisory warning on 4 Jan for Old Town and Porthcressa.  In the event there was damage to St Mary's Quay but the worst fears regarding tidal flooding were not realized.

See St Mary's Harbour Twitter tweets from 6 Jan here  for the full story and some impressive images. See Scilly Today:  "St Mary's Quay up and running following storm"   here .

Heavy seas have caused the cancellation of freight vessel sailings and repeated periods of heavy rain have put Lands End Airport out of action for an extended period.  Travellers have been re-routed via Newquay Airport.   See Scilly Today  here (Lands End Airport) and here (Freight deliveries).
