Visit Cornwall commissioned South West Research Company to evaluate "The Economic Impact of Cornwall’s Visitor Economy 2012. A subset of data from the report (dated Jan 2014) is provided below. It indicates that the whole of Cornwall saw a downturn in tourism activity in 2012 but that Scilly fared worse that Cornwall as a whole and worse that Penwith as far as revenue was concerned.
Digging into the detail reveals that serviced accommodation
on Scilly experienced the greatest loss in 2012 with revenue dropping from £16.47
M in 2011 to £14.02M. Revenue from domestic
visitor nights in serviced accommodation dropped 14.9% but revenue from foreign
visitor nights dropped 43% (from £2.92M to £1.66M).
Detailed statistics are not yet available for 2013 but
transport numbers indicate there was a further overall decline. Initial impressions for 2014 are that visitor
numbers are up.
